Zephyrs pound New Ulm
St. Paul, MN - The Mahtomedi Zephyrs played the part of the number one seed as the dispatched the New Ulm Eagles by a score of 6-0 at the Xcel Energy Center Wednesday night. The Zephyrs peppered New Ulm goaltender Nikolai Dulac with 27 first period shots and captured a 3-0 lead as they built momentum to their quarterfinal round win.
It took 13:13 of play in the first period for the Zephyrs (22-6-1) when JD Metz scored with an assist from from Colin Hagstrom. Metz's goal opened the flood gates for two more markers one, just :59 later by Tom Paradise and then another at 15:27 by Metz. The three goals were scored in a span of 2:14. The Eagles (17-9-1) were out shot 27-3 in the fist period.
Keeping to the theme of scoring late, the Zephyrs struck for two more in the second period to open up the 5-0 lead going into the intermission. Joe Paradise scored at 13:09 of the period and brother Tom notched his second of the game a 15:17 to close out the scoring for the second period.
Cory Pilarski scored just :09 into the third period and turned the game into a runner, with running time. The Zephyrs out shot the Eagles 55-10 for the game and showed why they are the top seed. As the semi-finals take shape, the match-ups will continue to intrigue. The Zeyphyrs will face the winner of the Greenway and Delano game.
