Hornets Buzz Past Moorhead 4-2

by Matt Harrington

With two great games already in the books of the 2019 Class AA Quarterfinal Round, the #1 Edina Hornets and Moorhead Spuds played another quality matchup Thursday night. The Hornets jumped out to the early lead and never relinquished it, topping Moorhead by a 4-2 final.

The Hornets wasted no time in jumping on the board first. The speedy Jett Jungels scored his 30th goal of the season after cutting across the left slot and burying it past goaltender Hudson Hodges.

Later in the period, Edina added another goal, this time on the power play. Mr. Hockey candidate Mason Nevers fired a wrist shot from the top of the slot and it found the twine. Edina had several power play opportunities in the first period, and converted on one of them.

Just 1:39 into the second period, the Spuds tallied their first goal of the game. Cullen Gess scored the goal, and the Spuds received some much-needed momentum.

Less than five minutes later, Edina's lethal offense struck again. This time it was Liam Malmquist, his 27th goal of the season. Chorske's shot created a big rebound for Malmquist to clean up the garbage and bury it past the goaltender. Edina applied the pressure for the rest of the period, leading in shots 28-15 through two periods.

The Hornets controlled the momentum for a majority of the third period, but the Spuds wouldn't go away. With under 5 minutes to play, Nolan Westra's wrist shot fooled Louden Hogg and the Spuds were back within one.

Kevin Delaney answered for the Hornets with an empty netter in the final minute, giving the Hornets a 4-2 win over Moorhead.

Edina will face the winner of Duluth East and Saint Thomas Academy tomorrow evening.
